We are paranoid! Even we don’t know why? –Louise, my ride met was briefing me about the rules and regulations on how to ride in Honolulu, especially in Waikiki beach area. You need to know the law, not to obey it but to live your life– is what I felt after at the briefing session.

I was attending 5th International Marine Debris Conference, in USA’s most welcoming destination Honolulu, Hawaii. It is namely the biggest conference among the other conferences subjected to a single topic on ocean or oceanic environment. Nearly 400 plus people joined in this program, including very famous Roz Savage, Jack Jonson and many other high officials from USA state govt orgs, non-profits, universities, scientists and individuals. Most certainly it was the most effective gathering of people in the name of conference. So it was very successful, along with the mesmerizing beauty of the land, people on the streets of Waikiki to brown sandy beaches. It was fabulous!

After 8 days, I flew to New York to meet my childhood friend. But also being there I had the same feeling, why he is so paranoid? Dosto, NY getting better day by day, now it is one of the safest place to live in USA. And now, I was also paranoid. I am in USA, why would I bother about the security? Aren’t they maintaining the peace of the whole world? Aren’t they spending (or sacrificing) their lives for making the word a livable place for everyone? If so, why would I think of taking care of my very limited resources that I am carrying? Aren’t they keeping peace even in their land too? I became clueless!

The feeling kept bugging me. I was visiting places like clubs, bars, pubs, and strip clubs, gay clubs to know the city and why it is NY!

If I say NY is the capital of the world, it seems I won’t be that wrong, if I say NY has the most diverse number of inhabitants, that won’t be wrong either. Arab’s to Jews, blacks to white, everyone everywhere is simply walking in the same shoe. But I had a feeling that there must be some ugly face of the city too, like the dark side of the moon.

I was obsessed by the album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ during my early ages. I became obsessed by the progressive rock tune. So far, I knew this album of Pink Floyd broke all records of the other recorders. This album left such a mark in my mind not only through the music but even the thought of its name “Dark Side of the Moon”. For me even if Moon is the best part of the sky, it must hold some spots. Like everything, Nothing is pure not even Love.

So, my excavation never met the plenary state. I kept on hitting places and peoples. I never had to go far. Basic pub to high ones, basic food vendors to posh ones with a decent place for parking! It is really interesting to find the rhythm of the city and yes it’s hard to take the city under my small microscope to find the dark side.

To find a clue I was mumbling the song, Money from the album “Dark Side of the Moon “.So well said, so well addressed ,despite the geographical location. You would need to have a certain amount of money to make a living. Yes simply living; not with a word Decency or decent. JUST LIVING! Having a couple of jeans, a sneaker, couple of beer or JD with coke, maximum one movie per month and few times eating out by the neighboring food store/restaurant/ bar. That is what I understood about the general people of NY.

So, Money is the singing habit of New Yorkers (to me). You will die for it, you will cry for it. You need money to live, even to survive.

I believe, money is the medium of transaction for an instant benefit or metaphoric wealth of peace for today, not even for tomorrow. So, are they (if) only running for and off the money? If the classes of society are defined by money, they will never believe that there is any class. But there is. Especially in NY, rich and poor is pure black and white and they proudly says that everyone is same (not actually by the definitive buying capacity, like everywhere everything is open for every one if you have the same or equal amount of money to avail that). So, money is the most versatile and prolific means of meaning the standard of life, living and humanity. (A rich person uses greener products with a plastic wrap and high price).

Money
Get away
You get a good job with good pay and you’re okay
Money
It’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I’ll buy me a football team

Money
Well, get back
I’m all right Jack
Keep your hands off of my stack
Money
It’s a hit
Don’t give me that do goody good bullshit
I’m in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
I think I need a Lear jet

Money
It’s a crime

Share it fairly
But don’t take a slice of my pie
Money
So they say
Is the root of all evil today

New York City, with a population of over 8,000,000 people, is the most populous city in the United States. It is known for its status as a financial, cultural, transportation, and manufacturing center, and for its history as a gateway for immigration to the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, it is also a destination of choice for many foreign visitors. Both state and city were named for the 17th century Duke of York, James Stuart, futureJames II and VII of England and Scotland.

New York was inhabited by the Algonquian, Iroquois, and LenapeNative American groups at the time Dutch settlers moved into the region in the early 17th century. In 1609, the region was first claimed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch. Fort Nassau was built near the site of the present-day capital of Albany in 1614. The Dutch soon also settled New Amsterdam and parts of the Hudson River Valley, establishing the colony of New Netherland. The British took over the colony by annexation in 1664.

The borders of the British colony, the Province of New York, were roughly similar to those of the present-day state. About one third of all the battles of the Revolutionary War took place in New York. New York became an independent state on July 9, 1776, and enacted itsconstitution in 1777. The state ratified the United States Constitutionon July 26, 1788 to become the eleventh state of the union. From Wiki

Zanskar and Ladakh in the winter is challenge enough as the frost smoke wreathes the Indus. The Chadar a ‘veil’ for the snow that covers the river in winter, is one of the great adventures of the world. To penetrate the Zanskar gorges in winter is a serious undertaking and Zanskaris you meet en route inevitably look at you Greet with Juley and askance, and reply ‘Chadar?’

With an unbelieving nod of the head; and then salute you as they go, Zanskari fashion. The frozen Zanskar river, part of the Indus watershed, has been used by the people of Zanskar, Tibetans who settled in the Zanskar valley over 1000 years ago to go back and forth to the outside world when the passes are locked into frozen winter silence, for centuries and still going on. Originally this route was used to carried/trading butter, salt and other many commodities these villagers traded with the outside world. It had to be traded in winter, as it was the only time it could travel from the cool summer cellars of their houses to Leh without spoiling. Today, they go back and forth still trading, but also taking children to school or making visits to the sacred (monasteries) sites around Leh. Meeting the Zanskaris as they travel this ancient route is just one of many high points for those who join this adventure.

The abundant wildlife, and incredible scenery are more highlights – as you look up from the bottom of the Zanskar gorge and realize, yes, that is the frozen river beneath. Fish scatter from your shadow under the ice, and snow leopard tracks pattern the snow. This is not just a full scale winter expedition, but a trek into the past, where we enjoy in our high-tech winter gears, will trek side by side with locals wearing woolen Gonchas and sounding the ice with their stout poplar staffs to drive away the demons that lurk there.
